Velvet Handling

Once removed, velvet is tagged with a plastic identity tie and quickly frozen on farm. The identification system provides information about the source of each piece of velvet, and guarantees that it was removed according to the NVSB programme standards. The NVSB records all tag numbers to assist traceability.

Velvet is sold by the farmer in this frozen form to velvet processors, either directly by individual contract or through weekly velvet pools. The major pools are operated by Wrightson and Velpool, who grade the velvet pieces (‘sticks’) according to industry agreed grading guidelines and offer different grade lots for sale by tender.
